Built from a Lifetime Around Emergency Vehicles
Alta Emergency Response Vehicles (Alta ERV) grew out of a lifelong connection to public safety and a belief that electric vehicles have a place in modern emergency response.
Our founder, Jon Krueger, grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin, a community with a long history of fire apparatus manufacturing. As a kid, he rode his bike to watch fire trucks being built. With family members serving as firefighters in Green Bay and Milwaukee, emergency response was always close to home.
After earning a degree in design, Jon trained as a Fire Fighter I and EMT and began his career in the emergency vehicle industry, selling, delivering, training, and servicing ambulances. He later spent six years as an International Manager, overseeing emergency vehicles and equipment destined for Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.
That international experience helped shape the idea behind Alta ERV.
In many parts of the world, deploying traditional emergency vehicles can be complicated by fuel, emissions, and service infrastructure. Jon saw the potential for a rugged, capable electric platform that could be deployed without the same dependence on specialized diesel fuel and support infrastructure.
The capabilities of modern electric platforms opened up even more possibilities for emergency response, including high ground clearance, water-fording capability, instant torque, large amounts of available power, and flexible space for equipment and technology.
While working in the emergency vehicle industry, Jon continued fabricating and servicing emergency vehicles in his own garage. After earning his MBA from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, he committed to the vision full-time and opened Alta ERV's production shop in Centerville, Minnesota.
Jon also continues to serve as a Minnesota Smokechaser, keeping Alta ERV connected to the realities of working in the field and the people who depend on their equipment.
In 2024, Alta ERV built an electric rapid response vehicle equipped with an ultra-high-pressure extinguishing system on the Rivian R1T platform.
We built it to test it, and to try to make it fail in order to see if it was a viable solution.
We took it directly to the people who would use it. We conducted demonstrations and field testing with municipal fire departments, military bases, industrial facilities, and airports, gathering feedback from the people who understand emergency response firsthand.
The feedback led us in a new direction. Fire departments saw the potential for electric vehicles, but they also told us what they needed next: a purpose-built command vehicle.
In late 2024, Alta ERV completed its first Rivian R1S command vehicle. Drawing on more than 15 years of relationships with emergency lighting providers, cabinet builders, console manufacturers, and other emergency vehicle suppliers, we developed a purpose-built Command Vehicle around the Rivian platform.
Today, Alta ERV vehicles are no longer just concepts or prototypes. They are in service and being used for real-world emergency response.
The organizations using our vehicles are seeing firsthand the potential advantages of electric platforms, including quiet operation at emergency scenes, reduced fuel and maintenance requirements, immediate power, and the ability to support the equipment and technology needed to get the job done.
We know electric vehicles aren't the right answer for every emergency vehicle. Our goal isn't to replace every truck in the bay.
Our goal is to identify where electric platforms make sense and build reliable vehicles that solve real problems for first responders.
We work directly with our customers from the initial concept through design, delivery, and service. We listen to the people who use these vehicles, test what we build in the real world, and use what we learn to make the next vehicle better.
Functional. Maintainable. Sustainable
